“The progression of the pandemic leads us to extend curfew measures to 38 new departments and one overseas area,” Prime Minister Jean Castex announced on Thursday as the country recorded 41,622 new COVID-19 cases within the past 24 hours – nearly twice the amount recorded the previous day.

This brings the total number of departments under curfew to 54, for which the effects could be measured in several weeks.

“The second wave is here. We are now observing a rapid and very worrying progression of the pandemic in all European countries. No one is spared”, warned the prime minister.

“Let’s make things clear: the situation is serious,” he added, noting, however, that it is still “possible to avoid much tougher measures.”
