A mega-scandal erupted during a meeting of a Bulgaria’s temporary parliamentary audit committee on Wednesday (May 5th). One of the biggest land barons in Bulgaria, Svetoslav Ilchovski, made revelations about the mafia-type pressure exerted on him by people from the ruling party and the sums he had given them in order to secure his business.
The most scandalous part were his revelations of what was behind the photos of drawers full of bundles of €500 and gold ingots of the now outgoing PM Boyko Borissov. The businessman claims that he has a recording showing who took the photos – a famous playmate – and claims that the gold ingots and the call girl were gifts for Borissov’s birthday. The businessman also said who made the gifts – two rich businessmen.
Last June an anonymous email sender leaked to the media a photo of Borissov sleeping in his bedroom in the official state residence in Boyana with a handgun on his nightstand. Other photos showed drawers full of bundles of 500-euro notes and a few gold ingots, in what appears to be the same bedroom. Although Borissov never denied the authenticity of the photos, the prosecution didn’t press charges against him.
Ilchovski introduced himself to MPs as a major landowner – owning 15,000 hectares of land. He started buying land 17-18 years ago, claiming he had never been involved in EU projects.
His said people from Borissov’s GERB party started racketeering him in 2012, saying that he paid them “700-800 thousand levs a year [€350,000-400,000]. Anyway, I earn 10 million [a year], I gave them this money for peace of mind,” Ilchovski explained.
The most scandalous part of the businessman’s story, however, was about the content of two video recordings and his tale of three parties attended by Borissov – in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
He said that at such meetings it was decided which businessman who doesn’t pay will get burned. At one of these meetings a video was played in which a famous businessman from Karnobat is seen in jail, being raped by inmates.
But there was another video, he said. “The video is about a young woman that everyone is looking for in Bulgaria. A famous playmate, she works as a call girl. She was sent to service the prime minister and she took the pictures”, the businessman told MPs. The gold ingots, he said, were a gift for Borissov’s birthday.
Ilchovski said he saw one of the businessmen, nicknamed ‘The Chicken’, giving Borissov a small ingot. But another businessman gave him a big one. When Borissov made ironic remarks about the small ingot, ‘The Chicken’ gave Borissov two more gold bars.
