The Nordic countries have adopted an all-hazards approach in preparation for future natural or man-made emergencies and crises, according to a statement released on 3 November by Nordic Prime Ministers and representatives from Greenland, the Faroe Islands and Åland after they met in Copenhagen.

According to the statement, the Nordic representatives also committed to deepening cooperation and coordination, covering everything from ensuring the running of clean tap water to securing financial infrastructure.

Even if cooperation between the Nordic countries is extensive, the refugee crisis and the coronavirus pandemic have revealed shortcomings where governments need to act together on short notice.

“The pandemic has been a challenge of historic proportions. Now that we’re in a better situation, we must learn from our experiences. We must be better prepared ahead of future crises. We’re certain that there are more crises to come,” said Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen in the Nordic Council press release.

According to the statement, the countries stand united against “major fires, floods, incidents involving chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear risks, or other accidents and hazards, recognising also the risks imposed by climate change”.

Also mentioned is access to global supply chains, critical professional labour force availability, and maintaining food security and sustainable energy systems. “Our aim is to become the most sustainable and integrated region in the world by 2030,” ends the statement.

The Finnish PM, Sanna Marin said: “By stepping up Nordic cooperation on the security of supply and other emergency preparedness, we help to safeguard a Nordic Region that can take action in any situation.”
