North Macedonia’s government has approved the text of the bill on Control of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, which is harmonised with several international acts.

One of the standout points is the establishment of the Agency for Control of Cultivation and Extraction of Cannabis and Production of Cannabis for Medical and Scientific Purposes, which performs its activities on the basis of the principles of legality, expertise, professionalism, responsibility, efficiency and transparency.

Another important feature of the bill is the obligation of the companies with licenses for the cultivation of cannabis for medical purposes to pay funds in the amount of 10% of the net profit realised in the current year on an appropriate account in the budget of North Macedonia.

The funds raised in this special account will be used for projects of public interest, such as support for the Rare Diseases Fund, support for the media fund, programme priorities in sports, culture, civil society, as well as to support the work of the newly envisaged agency.
