Portugal is to participate in 2022 in the NATO `Response Force’, a multinational joint force of high readiness “capable of ensuring a rapid military response to an emerging crisis”, contemplating a `task force’ that can be activated by the Atlantic Alliance.
“According to the international commitments made with NATO, in 2022 Portugal will participate in the NATO Response Force (NRF), which is under the command of the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) and constitutes a multinational joint force of high readiness capable of ensuring a rapid military response to an emerging crisis,” the Ministry of Defence (MDN) revealed in a response sent to Lusa.
The structure of the NATO Response Force includes in 2022 the designated ‘Very High Readiness Joint Task Force’ (VJTF), a structure with readiness of up to seven days. According to the MDN, “the means allocated by Portugal to the VJTF, for 2022, may be employed by NATO, in case of activation, in whole or in part, depending on the type of mission to be performed”.
