While the public hearings of seven potential candidates for the general prosecutor position are still ongoing, Prime Minister Igor Matovič warned on Monday that should one of the coalition parties elect the new prosecutor general with the help of the opposition, his party OĽaNO will leave the government and resign.
Slovakia is in the process of selecting a new general prosecutor – a key post for the future of law enforcement in the country.
However, in light of the recent investigations into the alleged corruption, misconduct and even criminal activity of several judges, the former police president, the former special prosecutor and the former prosecutor general, the process of selecting a new prosecutor general is very much in the spotlight.
Matovič’s warning comes after rumours that one of the coalition parties made a deal with the opposition to support one of the candidates. (Zuzana Gabrižová | EURACTIV.sk)
