Public prosecutor to investigate Salvini’s social media guru

Salvini, who in the past praised Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom he met and took a picture of himself wearing a T-shirt with Putin’s face in Moscow, has condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Italian news agency ANSA reports. [ANSA/ EPA-EFE/RICCARDO ANTIMIANI]

On Monday, Italy’s public prosecutor said that it would be investigating Luca Morisi for the sale and possession of “liquid drugs” after he resigned from his position as Matteo Salvini’s social media strategist.

The news sparked significant reactions as many of the League’s social media posts, created under his supervision, have repeatedly targeted migrants, singling them out as drug dealers and criminals.

Morisi was also responsible for several winning tactics, such as nicknaming Salvini “The Captain” and advising him to broaden the party’s scope by no longer stigmatising Southern Italy and identifying foreigners as the main political enemy to rail against.

“He’s a friend who made a mistake”, Salvini commented, sending his support to Morisi. It’s a particularly sensitive moment for the former interior minister as his support is seemingly eroding in favour of Meloni’s equally far-right Brothers of Italy.
