The Serbian Ecological Uprising movement sent an open letter to Chinese President Xi Jinping saying that Chinese companies were “complicit in horrific poisoning” that had “unforeseeable and irreversible consequences” on the health of Serbian citizens, children and nature.
“Chinese companies are welcome in Serbia, but under conditions consistent with a civilised international and business partnership, which entails following the law, labour regulations and environmental protection standards,” added the press release of the Ecological Uprising, which belongs to the opposition We Must coalition.
Together with a group of residents from the eastern mining city of Bor and surrounding villages, the Uprising held a protest in front of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade on March 27, demanding that President Vučić make public all contracts signed with Zijin, the owner of the Bor copper plant, and other Chinese outfits.
The protesters claimed that Zijin was not abiding by environmental regulations and was taking their land, in which they implicated the state.
