Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabić said on Thursday that she was generally satisfied with the European Commission’s report about Serbia’s progress in the process of association with the EU, and that the government would “focus on the recommendations” in the report and continue working towards fulfilling them.

Speaking at the plenary session of the Serbian parliament, debating the draft conclusion about the presentation of the Commission’s Report on the Republic of Serbia for 2021, submitted by 15 MPs, Brnabić said that the fulfilling of recommendations had already begun/

For the first time since 2016, she added that the EU Commission “delivered a completely positive narrative in view of the rule of law and acknowledged the improvements in the field of freedom of expression and media.”

Brnabić stated that this assessment had been contributed to by the forming of two working groups dedicated to the media – the Working Group for implementing the Media Strategy and the Working Group for the safety and protection of journalists.

The statements made by Brnabic do not specifically reflect what was written in the report, nor does everyone share the same positive view. In an oped for EURACTIV, German MEP Viola von Cramon said the Commission had “watered down” reality in Serbia’s progress report.
