‘It’s their choice’. The European Parliament must adopt a resolution stating that it is Roma people’s choice to live in marginal and very poor socio-economic conditions in Europe, according to Bulgarian MEP Angel Dzhambazki (VMRO/ECR).
Dzhambazki’s comments are featured in a draft report submitted to the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE).
In his draft report, rapporteur Romeo Franz (Greens, Germany) has called on the European Commission to prepare a directive on equal opportunities and the inclusion of people of Roma origin.
The project concerns the implementation of national strategies for Roma integration and the existing EU framework to combat negative attitudes towards Roma people.
According to Dzhambazki, however, the living conditions of Roma peoples are due to their refusal “to comply with the regulations of the member states and sabotage the attempts to be fully integrated into society,” and there would be “no such thing” as discrimination against Roma people.
The Bulgarian MEP also demanded the removal of a section from Franz’s draft, which calls on EU members to recognize “anti-Gypsyism as a concrete form of racism against people of Roma origin”.
