Swedish state epidemiologist and the face of the country’s pandemic strategy, Anders Tegnell, said that he is having second thoughts about how his country has been dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. But why the sudden change of heart?
Sweden adopted a very different strategy to most countries, based on recommendations rather than restrictions. Restaurants and bars, for example, have remained open.
According to Swedish radio, Tegnell’s change of heart stems from the country’s high mortality rates. Sweden’s daily death toll is about 50 – 4,542 deaths had been recorded as of Wednesday (3 June).
“If the kind of disease would hit us again and if we would know what to do, I’d say that our actions should be somewhere in between what Sweden and the rest of the world have done,” he said. (Pekka Vänttinen | EURACTIV.com)
