Although 21 June has been earmarked as the day when the government will ease the remaining restrictions on social interaction and distancing, a significant increase in infections in recent days, largely from the Indian variant of the virus, has prompted concerns from scientists that the rules should remain in place for another month. UK health ministers have attributed the tiny death rate to the success of its vaccination programme. However, some scientists have warned that without a cautious approach, the UK risks seeing another wave of deaths from the virus.
