UK tech regulator moots company-specific rules

The UK plans to issue tech giants customised regulatory rules, as part of a plan to overhaul competition rules for the tech sector.

The plan set out by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) would set out codes of conduct for individual firms, and proposes that tech firms should make their services interoperable. It would also reform merger rules to give the regulator a final say, which would depend on whether a merger would benefit consumers.

Meanwhile, the CMA has also mooted creating a new Digital Markets Unit with powers to fine tech companies up to 10% of their global turnover if they do not comply with their proposed remedies to anti-competitive behaviour. (Benjamin Fox | EURACTIV.com)
