“We call on all political forces in Montenegro to work together to maintain a strategic orientation that reflects the desire of the people of Montenegro to achieve the reforms necessary to make their hopes for a future in the EU a reality,” EU chief diplomat Josep Borrell and US State Secretary Antony Blinken said in a joint statement.
At the time of publishing the statement, Deputy Prime Minister Dritan Abazović was in the State Department talking to Wendy Sherman, Deputy State Secretary.
Sherman said that Montenegro has the support of the US in the goal of stronger reforms that will accelerate its path towards EU accession.
Karen Donfried, Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, praised Montenegro’s results in the fight against organised crime and corruption, especially the historic seizure of 1.4 tons of cocaine and the suppression of cigarette smuggling by the Port of Bar.
Deputy PM Abazović also met Gabriel Escobar, Deputy Assistant Secretary overseeing policy towards the countries of the Western Balkans.
