The United States has made it clear that its partnership with Montenegro is with the state, not with any political party, US Western Balkans Envoy Gabriel Escobar said.

Escobar said that Montenegro saw a significant change in August last year, when the Democratic Party of Socialists of President Milo Đukanović, which held power for 30 years, lost elections.

“We are ready to cooperate with all Montenegrin partners who share the vision of a sovereign, inclusive, democratic country, which implements the necessary reforms as an aspirant for EU membership, while respecting its important obligations as a determined ally in NATO,” Escobar said.

Escobar concluded that this can be enhanced through inclusive dialogue, including civil society, focused on the goals that unite Montenegrins – peace, democratic processes, economic development, rather than on identity issues and the nationalist rhetoric that divides them.
