Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković said it should be looked into whether he personally was the target of Monday’s attack carried out in front of the government building in St. Mark’s Square, adding the attacker had been encouraged by the atmosphere in society created by hatemongers.
In particular, the prime minister pointed to the Homeland Movement (radical right) and its MPs Ivan Penava and Karolina Vidović Krišto, as well as the party’s leader Miroslav Škoro, over their inflammatory statements on the shooting incident.
Plenković also criticised commentators on the left for not finding it necessary to point out the difference between his HDZ party before he became party president in 2016 and today’s HDZ. “They should ask themselves why this transformation has come about and who carried it out”, he said.
War Veterans Minister Tomo Medved said that as a former war veteran he was saddened by the fact some people glorified Monday’s attack. (Željko Trkanjec | EURACTIV.hr)
