The newest member of the EURACTIV media network, EURACTIV Turkey, was launched at a press meeting and reception at Feyriye Palace in Istanbul on 17 October 2007, receiving widespread encouragement from government, business and media circles.

In her speech at the launch event on 17 October, managing director and publisher Zeynep Gögü? stated that as EURACTIV Turkey joins the network, they are aiming to shape Turkey’s EU agenda and become an efficient tool for overcoming the communication problem between Turkey and the EU.

“We will constitute an information sharing environment where Turkish private sector, official institutions and non-governmental organisations can have their voices heard and influence the decision-makers on EU issues”, she added.

Well-known public figures from the Turkish business world as well as media, political and academic circles participated in the launch reception, held after the press meeting.

During his speech to the assembled guests, EURACTIV network coordinator Ivan Stefunko said that “there is a lot of discussion in the EU about Turkey”. “The news related to Turkey only comes from western media”, Stefunko said. “From now on, we are expecting to receive real news from Istanbul and Ankara”, he added.

The website recorded 2,897 unique visitors in its first three days, and is aiming to help the network as a whole reach an overall figure of 600,000 returning visitors per month.

Turkish Minister of Culture and Tourism Ertugrul Günay welcomed the launch of EURACTIV Turkey and said: "Our integration with Europe will be left incomplete without the inclusion of cultural dimension. I believe that EURACTIV.com.tr, by providing diversity of information sharing, will support Turkey's opening up to the world and our projects for foreign publicity. I welcome this initiative."

Minister of State Kür?at Tüzmen said: "I believe that EURACTIV.com.tr will make important contributions to Turkey's relations with the EU, especially by providing information to Turkish exporters and enabling them to follow the developments closely. Moreover, it will play a role in influencing all the decision makers in EU issues. I recommend all the foreign export family to closely follow your website and make contributions for Turkey's benefit. I already believe that you will achieve successful results and wish you success in your work."

Oguz Satici, president of the Assembly of Turkish Exporters, said: "Euractiv.com.tr will make an important contribution to the resolution of problems with Turkey's relations with the EU. We will have the opportunity to access a transparent information-sharing environment in our own language and within an international network. I congratulate EURACTIV.com.tr for providing this opportunity to the actors of the Turkish economy".

C. Tanil Küçük, chairman of the board of directors of Istanbul's Chamber of Industry, said: "I am very happy that Euractiv.com, the prestigious EU news portal with a high number of visitors Europe-wide, will be available to the Turkish public in Turkish, with contributions from Turkish specialists. We believe that Euractiv.com.tr will make an important contribution to mutual understanding and familiarisation between the European and Turkish publics. We will be following Euractiv.com.tr and wish it every success for the future."

Ege Cansen, an economist and business advisor, said: "Through EURACTIV.com.tr, we are not expecting sympathy from the EU, but empathy. EURACTIV.com.tr might contribute to the transformation of Europe's 'sick man' into Europe’s healthy man. The news we hear from the European press about Turkey, generally, reflects what EU wants to hear. The sources of this news do not exceed 15–20 reporters and the EU news reporting continues to be a closed circuit. The motives behind it are never clear. EURACTIV.com.tr will be effective in opening up this closed circuit."

EURACTIV Turkey is published by Medya Europe, and was founded by Zeynep Gögü? - prominent Turkish journalist and Medya Europe founder - in partnership with the Brussels-based international network EURACTIV.com. Its strategic partners, Referans and Hürriyet newspapers, provide visual and content support.
