The resolution on the Commission's second progress report
on economic and social cohesion, tabled by Greek Socialist
MEP Emmanouil Mastorakis (452 votes in favour, 56 against
and 23 abstentions) stressed that readjustments in the
allocation of spending in favour of the new Member States
should not be at the cost of the poorer regions in the
present Member States which will lose their eligibility as
a result of the new statistical calculations. Up to 10 of
the existing regions in this category could be affected.
MEPs called for "for a more accurate setting of targets and
priorities of cohesion policies" and called "resources to
be made available must match the new requirements" in the
enlarged Union.

The resolution on structurally
disadvantaged regions, tabled by Spanish Conservative MEP
José Javier Pomès Ruiz (443 votes in favour, 42
against and 30 abstentions) called for special treatment in
the forthcoming period for the regions which suffer
permanent handicaps, such as islands, mountain regions or
regions with low population density.
