Brief – Research infrastructure’s importance highlighted via material sciences

Scientists have presented a number of
Commission-funded projects on material sciences that
benefit from European research
infrastructure.

The European research infrastructure initiative enables the
scientific community to attract talent, build a network
of researchers from all over Europe and beyond
and maximise resources. This infrastructure also makes a
significant contribution to the creation
of the European Research Area.

“Research infrastructure directly supports technological
innovation by offering the essential conditions and the necessary
critical mass to carry out cutting edge research,” said Janez
Poto?nik, the commissioner for science and research.

Research infrastructure refers to large-scale instruments,
installations and other facilities (single-site, multi-site or
virtual) that provide essential services to the scientific
community for basic or applied research. Developing research
infrastructure of European interest is one of the six priorities of
the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7).
