The EIN will seek to bring together, on an on-going basis, politicians, academics, journalists, businessmen and party activists from across the centre-right spectrum Europe-wide. The focus will be on current issues of common concern, such as the implications of globalisation and future trends in society, the promotion of democracy and accountability in the EU, how to create jobs in Europe, the role of the private sector in providing public services, the crises in farming and food safety, the sustainability of the Economic and Monetary Union, and the geo-political framework in the post September 11 world. This activity will be backed up by a website, launched to coincide with the summer university. The initiative is a response to the centre-left "Third Way" thinking that dominated the 1990s, and it reflects the growing number of centre-right governments in power in EU Member States.
