At the invitation of the Commission President Barroso, a group of ten European Nobel prize winners met Mr Barroso and commissioners Figel (education and culture) and Poto?nik (science and research) to discuss European research policy. “When it comes to research, researchers can give us better ideas than bureaucrats,” said Mr Barroso. While giving their support for EU activities on the area and to the plans to establish a European Research Council, the laureats warned the Commission “not to uncouple links between EU research, education and cultural policies”. They also highlighted the need to cut EU science and research policy red tape. The Commission will hold a follow-up meeting with the laureats in the second quarter of 2005.
