Ministers and high-level representatives of the 13 acceding and candidate countries held talks on 28 November with Research Commissioner Philippe Busquin in order to increase their participation in the EU'sSixth Framework Programme for Research2002-2006 (FP6). According to Commission data, today barely 13 per cent of the 100,000-plus applications for participation in FP6 originate in the accession and candidate countries. In early 2003, the Commission launched "specific support actions" worth a total of 13 million euro to encourage these countries' participation.

Accession and candidate countries were involved in 40 per cent of all FP6 proposals, and their participation was most marked in the fields of nanotechnologies (21.8 per cent), information society (16.8 per cent) and sustainable development, global change and ecosystems (9.4 per cent).

Bucharest will host a conference on the participation of accession and candidate countries in FP6 on 12-13 February 2004.
