Commission to prepare policy on Internet and health

The European commission is preparing two Communications on e-Health that will provide quality criteria for health related websites and clarify the legal aspects of e-Health.

The European Commission is currently preparing two communications on e-Health.

  • The first communication will set quality criteria for websites on health. A draft of the guidelines for quality criteria for health related websites and definitions of key terms is open for comment until end of October 2001, through the Commission’s .
  • The second communication will concern the legal aspects of e-Health, clarifying the impact of existing legislation on e-Health practices. This Communication will address issues such as: data protection, on-line liability, distance contracting, pharmaceutics selling and advertising, medical devise certification.

While an estimated 100,000 websites are providing health information of some sort, some are of highly questionable quality. In the context of the European Commission's "e-Europe" initiative, "e-Health" aims at establishing a legal framework and codes of conduct, to ensure that the benefits of the Internet are maximised.

 

Both Communications on e-Health are due to be published in March 2002, under the Spanish presidency.
