As a result of the fourth Information Society Technology call for proposals under the EU’s Sixth Research Framework Programme (FP6), the Commission has granted one billion euro to launch 276 new research projects. A further 200 projects met the required quality criteria for EU funding but were turned down due to lack of funds. “Europe continues to under-invest considerably in information and communication technologies (ICT) research for lack of sufficient resources both at EU level and at national level,” said Information Society and Media Commissioner Viviane Reding. A total of 3,635 million euro has been earmarked for the information society technologies in the FP6 (2002-2006). The Commission proposal for the FP7 envisages 11,200 million euro of expenditure in ICT research between 2007-2013.
