Informal minister meeting supports EU soil policy

On 24-26 May, the EU environment ministers met for an informal discussion on European soil policy.

In April 2002, the Commission issued a Communication called "Towards a Thematic Strategy for Soil Protection". It describes the problems facing soil use in the EU and it stresses the importance of taking action to improve the situation (see EURACTIV22 April 2002).

On 24-26 May, the environment ministers met for an informal meeting in Mallorca. They addressed the issue of soil protection and promoted a European integrated soil policy, with a specific focus on erosion, loss of organic material and soil pollution. The also stated that it is essential to set up a Community soil-watch or soil surveillance system.

The Commission's communication on soil protection will be on the agenda at the Environment Council on 24-25 June.
