It describes the problems facing soil use in the EU and it stresses the importance of taking action to improve the situation (see EURACTIV22 April 2002). On 24-26 May, the environment ministers met for an informal meeting in Mallorca. They addressed the issue of soil protection and promoted a European integrated soil policy, with a specific focus on erosion, loss of organic material and soil pollution. The also stated that it is essential to set up a Community soil-watch or soil surveillance system.
