The Commission has released the first batch of its contribution, worth 29 million euro, for the reconstruction of Iraq.
On 12 December 2003, the Commission released a 29 million euro purse, which is part of the 200 million euro it has pledged on behalf of the EU toward the reconstruction of Iraq. The contribution was made during the Madrid donors' conference in October 2003 (seeEURACTIV 24 October 2003). At the conference, the EU pledged a total of 1.24 billion euro for reconstruction in Iraq (including more than 600 million euro for 2004).
The 29 million euro purse will be channelled through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Thematic Trust Fund for Crisis Prevention and Recovery, and will support the UNDP, UNICEF and WHO's efforts to rehabilitate basic social services in Iraq (water and sanitation, education and health) and to implement livelihood- and income-generating schemes for the Iraqi people.
