EU considering Congo mission

The EU’s foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, has asked EU countries to send peacekeeping troops to the Democratic Republic of Congo in response to a request by the United Nations.

According to Mr Solana's proposal, the troops should be placed under the EU flag but should operate within the UN's mandate. Mr Solana said the EU should send a "not very large force" for a short period of time.

The fightings in the north-east of Congo have already claimed over 300,000 lives.

France said it was willing to take the lead. Britain is considering the UN request. Sweden and Denmark might be willing to support the French, while Belgium might provide logistics. Germany said "there was no appetite for sending troops", adding it was "completely unprepared for the Solana request". According to Mr Solana, the decision will take "months, not days."
