Analysis: “What evolution of the European market of the defence?”

The October edition of Institut Choiseul’s review GéoEconomie discusses how the European defence industry was affected by geopolitical changes since the end of the Cold War and how it could evolve.

According to Laetitia Blandin, Antonin Tisseron and in association with Cyrus Hodes, “the European market structure would be inadequate to allow industrials of the naval and land sector to remain competitive at global level and to maintain an European defence industrial and technological base (DTIB)”. The question arises if an “industrial strategy, supported by the setting-up of the Europe of Defence and Armament, could then be a solution to preserve the web of European industries”. In this context, it is crucial to focus on the sectors land and “land air defence” in order understand how the creation of a common market of armament could enhance both economic and political chances. 

Therefore, the authors suggest that “the Europeans should create a market, which would be vast enough and able to preserve the DTIB through the protection of a competitive industry”.
