Biodiversity becomes Commission priority

European Commission adopts series of action plans to integrate biodiversity protection into several EU policies

The European Commission adopted on 28 March a series of action plans to integrate biodiversity protection into several EU policies. The action plans aim to halt the loss of biodiversity in wildlife, ecosystems, crop varieties, animals and fish. They outline the necessary steps to tackle the loss of biodiversity in the sectoral policies agriculture, fisheries, environment, development and co-operation.

The plans are a follow-up to the EU's Biodiversity Strategy adopted in 1998, and implement the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) agreed during the Rio World Summit in 1992.
