Developing an effective follow-up process for WSSD Partnerships: the role of the Commission on Sustainable Development Abstract Approximately two hundred and fifty voluntary partnerships for sustainable development have been launched as a result of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD). These partnerships are addressing many of the issues highlighted in the WSSD Plan of Implementation and have been recognized as one of the most innovative outcomes from the Summit. This paper highlights some of the issues that will need to be addressed by the follow-up process for WSSD partnerships, and sets out some options for its design. While it is clear that the WSSD partnerships for sustainable development have the potential to play a significant role in delivering the commitments made in Johannesburg and in reinvigorating the work of the CSD, there are still many issues that need to be addressed both by individual partnerships and by the wider WSSD follow-up process if this potential is to be fulfilled.
