Guy Verhofstadt speaking to protesters in Maidan Square, Kiev
Guy Verhofstadt (Open VLD, Belgium), Liberal and Democrat Group Leader in the European Parliament, spoke to the protesters gathered in Maidan Square in Kiev about the sanctions EU put in place in order to stop the violence.
Verhofstadt was the first of the EU leaders to address those fighting for democracy in Ukraine, after the violent clashes of the last few days. He travelled to Kiev together with ALDE Group Vice-President, Marielle De Sarnez (Modem, France) and Hans van Baalen (VVD, Holland), President of Liberal International. -

“Extremely difficult, if not impossible” for independent Scotland to join EU, Barroso says
European Commission President José Manuel Barroso said in a BBC interview on Sunday that states breaking away from existing EU countries would struggle to gain EU membership.
It would be "extremely difficult, if not impossible” for the European Union to grant membership to such states , Barroso added.
Barroso's comments came only days after the British government said an independent Scotland would not be able to keep sterling as its currency.
Scotland is due to hold a referendum on independence in September. -

The ALDE Party has closed its 34th and most successful annual Congress, held this year in London, between 28 and 30 November 2013.

The Lisbon Council hosted the Brussels launch of Turbulent and Mighty Continent: What Future for Europe?, the new book by Anthony Giddens, former director of the London School of Economics. Lord Giddens delivered The 2013 Jean Jacques Rousseau Lecture and presented an array of new ideas for energising the European project. Joaquín Almunia, vice-president of the European Commission, served as discussant.
