Russia will respond to NATO boosting its military presence in eastern members nearby its borders such as Poland and the Baltic states, Moscow's ambassador to the Western military alliance said on Thursday (1 June).
NATO yesterday (19 December) urged Russia to use its clout with insurgents in Eastern Ukraine to make a troubled truce stick, as the two sides held talks to defuse what are the worst tensions since the Cold War.
NATO will seek to reassure Russia today (19 December) that its troop deployments in the Baltics and Poland next year are purely defensive, in a rare meeting of the alliance's and Kremlin's envoys that is unlikely to resolve long-standing grievances.
