EU calls for ‘free and fair’ elections in Ukraine

EU Enlargement Commissioner Štefan Füle called on Ukrainian leaders and opposition on Thursday to form an 'inclusive' government and urged Kiev to ensure 'free and fair elections' in the crisis-hit country. In a 3 day visit to Kiev, in which he held talks with government and opposition, Füle insisted on the need for both sides to agree on constitutional reform, potentially limiting government powers.

Commission proposes standard VAT declaration for EU companies

The European Commission presented on Wednesday a new proposal to standarise VAT return for business and companies across Europe. Aiming at slashing red-tape for businesses, ease tax compliance and make tax administrations across the Union more efficient, this new regulation can cut costs for EU businesses by up to €15 billion a year, according to the EU's executive.

EU keeps cool in fresh Russian-Ukrainian gas dispute

Ukraine and Russia are embroiled in a new gas dispute after Moscow sent Kyiv a huge bill for gas it commissioned under long-term contracts but did not use. Asked by EURACTIV if there was a risk of a repeat of the 2009 gas crisis, the European Commission said it expected both sides to make sure that shipments to the EU remain uninterrupted.

Putin pushes for visa deal, ignores EU pressure on Syria
