Romania could face legal action after environmental groups lodged a complaint with the EU over allegedly lax penalties against coal power polluters in the Eastern European country.
Environmental activists have accused Greece of violating an international convention by directly granting permits to its national energy company and making it impossible for anyone to launch a legal challenge against them.
The European Union on 28 April approved new air pollution limits, which could save over 20,000 lives annually through the reduction of pollution from power plants, specifically those which are coal-fired.
