    Thousands of Maltese hunters took to the streets to in celebration yesterday (12 April) after narrowly winning a referendum on the controversial tradition of spring hunting, in which migrating birds are killed before they can breed.

    An EU summit opening in Brussels today (14 March) is expected to see leaders offer conflicting views on the economy, with France’s Socialist President François Hollande leading calls for Europe to loosen the austerity policies adopted in response to the eurozone debt crisis. Hollande will find an unexpected ally in UK Prime Minister David Cameron, who also backs a more “flexible” approach to debt policing.

    Malta's opposition Labour Party led by Joseph Muscat has won the country's general election for the first time in 15 years. The outgoing premier Lawrence Gonzi conceded defeat for his Nationalist Party.
